Seven Steps to Tackling any Problem Area Tuesday July 10th 2012

Step One – General Assessment

Start with a general overview first…………..Pick a room or a problem area in your home/office……..what you’re looking to achieve in this step is just an overall opinion of the layout or problem.

Ask yourself “Is this room or place functioning well?”……………How successful do you think it is organized right now?

Think is general terms and start will general ideas of how you could make some improvements.

This may sound strange but I’ve found it works………….Ask yourself a question out loud just before you go to sleep………your brain will automatically search for the answer for you while you sleep………… Be specific……..”What can I do to make _____?________ more organized?”…………..or………….”How can I organize my ____?______better”.

Step Two – Further Assessment……What works already and what doesn’t.

Think about what already works for you in that area…….if something is working well for you then don’t change it…………… The aim is to make it more functional so there is no need to change what already works for you.

The easiest way to determine if it’s NOT working for you is to ask yourself. “What annoys me the most about this room or problem area?”……..or……….. “What wastes my time and energy the most?”

Step Three – Envision

It’s a good idea before you start to re-organise your space is to imagine what it would look like when your finished………this will give you a starting place to work from………………… Depending on the size of the task and your budget you may have to implement your changes over time.

Step Four – Map out a plan

Sometimes it can be helpful to draw a plan of the room or area before you start, especially if new furniture will be involved……………………..Grab you tape measure and see if what you’ve envisaged in Step 3 will fit.

Step Five – The Steps to Action – Questions to ask Yourself

How will I get from the Problem to the Solution?

What steps will I take?

Where do I start?

How hard will it be…….will I need help?

What tools will I need?

Is there anything I will have to do before I begin? – (Clean Out/Purge – more about this process is available in my Free Report – ‘Six Secrets to Creating a Highly Organized Home’

It may sound trivial but writing the steps down will be really helpful!

Step Six – Time to Begin

Now it’s time to start implementing your plan.

Depending on the size of the task your undertaking will determine the time it takes to accomplish it………..

It’s not uncommon for big tasks to take a few days!!……………….so don’t get discouraged if you don’t seem to be getting anyway……it will all come together in the end.

I feel I want to encourage you a bit more here because I’m not there to help you in person………….. I have worked with some lovely people who get really overwhelmed through this process…………. but I promise if you persevere through the mess you create……..and don’t skip any of the steps you’ve written down or thought about in the planning process …………………..you will come out the other side and be glad you did.

Having said that though…………take one step at a time…………. and don’t be afraid to change little things along the way if you see something that might work better.

Step Seven – Final Assessment

When you’ve finished give it a few days or even weeks and then reassess your success.

Is it working well……..is there anything you can improve upon.

Overtime you can reassess………make changes…………..or even give it a complete overhaul when your needs or tastes change.

Organization is a life’s journey so make it an adventure and have fun.
